Gold prices, which recently hit historic highs, witnessed a sharp correction just ahead of Dhanteras 2025. In the national capital, the price of 24-carat gold dropped by ₹2,400 to ₹1,32,400 per 10 grams on Saturday, retreating from the record ₹1,34,800 per 10 grams seen a day earlier. According to the All India Sarafa Association, gold of 99.9% purity had surged ₹3,200 on Friday, creating a new all-time high before the pullback.
In the local bullion market, gold of 99.5% purity also slipped ₹2,400 to ₹1,31,800 per 10 grams after touching ₹1,34,200 in the previous session. Despite the recent dip, prices remain significantly elevated compared to last year. Gold was worth ₹81,400 per 10 grams on Dhanteras 2024, which is a 62.65% increase from the previous year.
Silver Also Declines but Remains Expensive
Silver followed a similar trend. After closing at ₹1,77,000 per kg on Friday, the white metal tumbled ₹7,000 to ₹1,70,000 per kg. However, on an annual basis, silver has delivered even stronger returns than gold — gaining ₹70,300 or 70.51% from last year’s Dhanteras price of ₹99,700 per kg.
Why the Price Dip? Profit-Booking and Global Cues
Traders said that the correction happened because of weak signals from around the world, investors taking profits, and the US currency getting a little stronger. Spot gold in the international market touched a lifetime high of $4,379.44 per ounce before slipping 1.76% to close at $4,249.98 per ounce. Silver also declined 4.36%, from its record $54.49 per ounce to $51.90 per ounce.
“Globally, gold breached $4,300 per ounce, logging its biggest weekly gain in nearly two decades. In the domestic market, premiums surged to ₹782 per 10 grams, the steepest in over a decade,” said Inderbir Singh Jolly, CEO of PL Wealth Management.
Despite High Prices, Buyers Flood Jewellery Stores
Interestingly, the fall in prices did not deter consumers — in fact, it boosted demand. Across India, jewellery stores witnessed massive crowds as buyers rushed to make festive purchases ahead of Diwali.
“The festive fervour of Dhanteras upheld its sheen with a robust turnaround by consumers to invest in the yellow metal. Despite soaring prices, demand remained strong,” said Colin Shah, Managing Director of Kama Jewelry. He added that light-weight jewellery was especially popular among younger buyers, while heavier pieces saw demand due to the approaching wedding season.
Overall consumer turnout saw a 15–18% festive spike compared to last year.
India Spends ₹1 Lakh Crore This Dhanteras Season
The Confederation of All India Traders (CAIT) says that Indian shoppers spent almost ₹1 lakh crore during Dhanteras 2025, with gold and silver making up a huge ₹60,000 crore of that.. This marks a 25% rise over last year despite record-high prices.
Delhi’s bullion markets alone recorded sales exceeding ₹10,000 crore.
“The past two days have seen an unprecedented rush in jewellery markets,” said Pankaj Arora, National President of the All India Jewellers and Goldsmith Federation.
Why Indians Still Spend a Lot of Money on Gold
Gold is more than just an investment in the eyes of some cultures; it’s an emotion linked to wealth, custom, and divine blessings… Indians have long viewed gold as a sign of riches and a protective barrier against bad luck.. On auspicious occasions like Dhanteras, buying gold is believed to invite the blessings of Goddess Lakshmi, the deity of fortune.
“As fabrication costs rise, buyers are shifting towards coins and bars instead of heavy jewellery. Gold remains supported by a weaker dollar, expectations of US Fed rate cuts, and sustained central bank buying,” added Jolly.
The spiritual and historical importance of Dhanteras
Dhanteras, or Dhantrayodashi, is the start of the Diwali festival. Hindu texts state that on this day, Goddess Lakshmi appeared from the Milky Ocean’s churning (Samudra Manthan). The god of Ayurveda and health, Lord Dhanvantari, was born on this day..
Thus, Dhanteras symbolizes wealth, prosperity, health, and divine protection.
Buying gold, silver, new things, or utensils on this day is thought to bring good fortune and pleasant energy into one’s home.

When Pradosh overlaps with Vrishabha Lagna (Taurus Ascendant)—a “Sthir” or stable lagna—it becomes even more auspicious. Astrology says that things you do during a Sthir Lagna will pay off in the long run.
This is why buying gold or doing Lakshmi Puja during this time is thought to bring long-lasting wealth and security in money matters.

This celebration effectively blends religion, tradition, business, and culture. It is one of the rare occasions when purchasing gold is regarded as both a decent way to earn money and a religious act.
Final Thought: Prices Change, Faith Does Not
No matter how much gold costs, India will always be linked to it. It doesn’t matter how big or small the things you buy on Dhanteras are more important.
This is believed to bring wealth, security, and divine grace into the home as Dhanteras 2025 approaches if you do Lakshmi Puja and buy gold or silver during Pradosh Kaal and Vrishabha Lagna.
In the end, gold is more than metal. On Dhanteras, it becomes a blessing.
